Hardware and software
When buying a computer, make sure it meets the minimum requirements. This ensures sufficient processing power, storage capacity, and memory to handle datasets, virtualisation, and training/using AI models.
- Operating system:
- Windows 10/11, macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.
- Ensure that you have full administrator rights to install and manage all aspects of the system.
- Overall recommendation: Use a Windows machine, as the hardware on these devices is more flexible and extensible to accommodate the training of larger models.
- CPU:
- For Windows: Intel i5 (13th Gen or newer), AMD Ryzen 5 (5000 series or newer), or any higher-level chipsets, such as i7, i9, Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9.
- For macOS: Apple Silicon M2 or newer.
- RAM:
- Recommended minimum: 16 GB.
- This should be seen as the absolute minimum as some third-party AI models will struggle to load with this minimum amount of memory.
- Virtualisation also becomes easier with an increase in RAM.
- Overall recommendation: RAM sizes greater than 16 GB.
- Note (macOS): Some software may require virtualisation, as it may not be available for macOS or has limited features compared to the Windows version. In such cases, a Windows virtual machine would need to be run inside macOS, or an online service providing Windows hosting would be used. External hosting services are not provided as part of the course fees.
- Other options are to perform training in the cloud, using services such as Azure (possibly free) or Weights and Biases (has a free tier, but might not have enough resources to run large models).
- Graphics card (GPU):
- Minimum Windows requirements: NVIDIA RTX 3060 12GB.
- Recommended Windows requirements: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti 16GB. The more VRAM on the card, the better.
- macOS: Although training AI models is possible using Apple Silicon, different, specialised programming libraries are required. We can assist with these; however, the fixed (and shared) memory of Apple devices makes it difficult to train/load some of the larger models.
- Storage:
- Minimum: 500GB.
- Recommended: 1TB.
- Webcam and microphone: Students are expected to communicate with staff and fellow students via video and voice calls. It is recommended to use a good quality headset (headphones + microphone).
When you start the programme, you will receive information about the specific software you need to use for each course.
As part of the study programme, cloud services, such as Microsoft Azure, may be used. Wherever possible, services such as Azure for Students are used, which provide up to a NOK 1,000 in free credit (this varies depending on the service). Even though the programme is designed to use only the allocated free credits, in some cases, it may be necessary to purchase further credits. This may happen if you play around with your own projects or if you previously used up the free credits for another purpose. In such cases, these further credits would need to be purchased at your own expense.
