Summer often means more travel, public Wi-Fi, and online shopping – but also an increased risk of scams and cyberattacks. Emlyn Butterfield, Rector at Noroff University College, shares nine simple tips to help you stay safe online this summer.
How to protect yourself from digital threats
Here are 9 tips to help you stay safe online wherever you are this summer ☀️
👉🏼 Strong passwords: Use long and unique passwords for every account. A password manager makes them easier to manage.
👉🏼 Regular updates: Keep your operating system, browser, and software updated to patch known security vulnerabilities.
👉🏼 Antivirus software: Use reliable antivirus software to protect yourself against malware and other digital threats.
👉🏼 Beware of phishing: Avoid clicking links in suspicious emails or text messages, especially those asking for personal or financial information.
👉🏼 Safe browsing: Only visit secure websites, especially when shopping online. Look for “https://” and the padlock icon in the address bar.
👉🏼 Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Enable MFA whenever possible. It adds an extra layer of security by requiring more than just a password to log in.
👉🏼 Social media awareness: Review your privacy settings and be mindful of what you share online. Personal information can be used for identity theft.
👉🏼 VPN for public Wi-Fi: Public networks can be unsafe. A VPN helps protect your data by encrypting your internet connection.
👉🏼 Regular backups: Back up your files regularly to an external hard drive or cloud storage. This reduces the risk of losing important data in the event of a cyberattack.
