Camilla Mikkelsen-Nielsen (38) had dreamed of studying cybersecurity for years. When she discovered Noroff University College’s online study options, she decided to take the leap. Today, she balances her studies, family life, and a strong commitment to the student community.

Camilla lives in Gjøvik with her husband and children and had already built a long career before returning to education. For her, studying was not about starting over, but about pursuing an interest she had carried with her for years.

– I had been interested in cybersecurity for a long time, but it wasn’t until I discovered online studies that I felt the timing was finally right. That’s when I decided to pursue a dream I had been holding onto for years, she says.

It’s never too late to start

Camilla has a clear message for anyone considering higher education, especially later in life.

– I think many people place more limitations on themselves than they need to. If you truly want something, you can achieve far more than you think.

She acknowledges that studying alongside other responsibilities requires dedication, but believes the rewards make it worthwhile.

– Yes, it can be demanding at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Before you know it, you’re much closer to your goal than you ever imagined.

Balancing online studies with a busy family life

Returning to education as an adult requires structure, especially when everyday life is already filled with responsibilities.

– For me, the key is having good routines. I study during the day, spend time with my family in the afternoon, and often continue working in the evening. It’s all about staying consistent and planning ahead, she explains.

She is also conscious about reducing distractions.

– I try not to spend too much time scrolling on my phone and instead focus on family and studies. Small habits can make a huge difference over time.

Why cybersecurity is one of today’s most relevant fields

Camilla is currently in her second year of the Cyber Security bachelor’s programme at Noroff University College, which she describes as both challenging and highly relevant.

– The biggest challenge is the sheer amount there is to learn, especially in a field that evolves so quickly. That makes it even more important to build a strong foundation, she says.

At the same time, that constant change is exactly what keeps the field exciting.

– We’re living in a time where AI, automated attacks, and cyber warfare are high on the agenda. It really highlights how important and relevant this field has become.

She also highlights the quality of the teaching staff.

– The professors have deep specialist expertise and bring a lot of real-world experience into the classroom. That adds tremendous value to the learning experience.

Learning by doing

Throughout her studies, Camilla has actively sought opportunities to apply her knowledge in practice.

She has participated in competitions, industry events, and learning platforms such as TryHackMe, where she is now ranked among the top 2 percent of users globally.

– For me, learning is about trying, failing, and learning along the way. I enjoy stepping outside my comfort zone, even when I don’t have all the answers.

She points to CTF competitions, tech events, and conferences as some of the most valuable learning experiences.

– The more you expose yourself to these environments, the easier it becomes. You learn so much simply by showing up and getting involved.

More than a degree: Building networks and experience along the way

Camilla became involved in student life during her first year and now serves as Chair of the Learning Environment Committee (LMU), which works to strengthen the student experience at Noroff University College.

– I’ve always wanted to make a difference. For me, student representation is about listening to students and contributing to positive change and improvement.

Through LMU, she helps organise academic and social events that connect students with professionals from the industry.

One initiative that has attracted particular attention is “Thinking Thursdays”, where students meet and learn from people working in the field.

– Students get the opportunity to ask questions, build connections, and gain insight into potential career paths. For some, these events have even led to networking opportunities and job prospects.

Her involvement does not stop there. Following a recent election, she will also serve as President of the Student Parliament at Noroff University College during the upcoming academic year.

– I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute even more. It gives me new challenges and the chance to make an even greater impact on the student experience.

Her engagement has also opened doors beyond campus. Recently, she represented students at the NATO CCDCOE International Conference on Cyber Conflict (CyCon) in Tallinn, Estonia.

– Meeting experts from around the world and learning how they approach cybersecurity across government, defence, academia, and industry was an incredible experience. I returned home with new knowledge, fresh perspectives, and even greater motivation to pursue a career in cybersecurity, she says.

Looking ahead

While Camilla remains open to where her career path may lead, one thing is certain: she wants to combine her technical expertise with her passion for working with people.

– I enjoy working in teams and helping others succeed. In the long term, I can definitely see leadership becoming a natural direction for me.

She also has ambitions beyond her bachelor’s degree.

– Maybe I’ll be accepted into a master’s programme in 2027? We’ll see. I try not to place limitations on what’s possible.

Camilla may not know exactly where her journey will end, but she knows she is heading in the right direction.

– Before you know it, you’re much closer to your goal than you thought, she concludes.
