Why Study Applied Machine learning?

There is a growing demand for machine learning specialists worldwide. Companies have begun to implement machine learning in their businesses to improve performance and efficiency and reduce costs. With machine learning expertise, you will be the driving force behind this development.

Machine learning is a fundamental part of artificial intelligence, which involves teaching systems to generate new insights from existing data. The aim is to enable the system to recognise patterns without additional programming, making this approach highly valuable to businesses.

The programme will give you an insight into the fundamental aspects of machine learning, as well as basic programming skills in Python. You will learn how to use this to process data and prepare it for use in machine learning models, as well as how to interpret and visualise the results.

Career Opportunities

After completing Applied Machine Learning, you can pursue careers such as:

  • AI engineer
  • Data Analyst
  • Machine Learning Engineer
  • Software developer
  • Consultant in artificial intelligence and data mining

Programme information

The programme teaches you to deal with data quality challenges and gives you skills in preparing and organising data in an orderly way using statistical techniques. You will also be introduced to programming for machine learning. You will learn how to write code, format and manage data, test programs and solve problems in code. You will learn how to improve the accuracy of machine learning models and optimise applications. Throughout the programme, you will gain knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of big data visualisation concepts and techniques, as well as tools and techniques for different types of data.

The academic year ends with an exam project in which you can demonstrate the skills you have acquired during the programme. You are encouraged to find a real-world project to gain practical experience.

Hardware and software

When buying a computer, you should ensure that it meets the minimum requirements. This ensures sufficient processing power, storage capacity and memory to handle loading datasets and training machine learning models.

  • CPU: Intel i5, AMD Ryzen 5 or better
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 500GB (1TB is recommended)
  • Operating system:
    • Windows 10, MacOS 11 (Big Sur) or later.
    • Make sure you have full administrator rights to install and manage all aspects of the system.
  • Webcam and microphone: Students are expected to communicate with staff and fellow students via video and voice calls. It is recommended to use a good quality headset (headphones + microphone).

When you start the program, you will receive information about the specific software you need to use for each course. In general, however, you should have access to the following:

  • Spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Text software, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Noroff has ongoing admissions, and applications are processed in the order they are received. The earlier you apply, the earlier you can secure a study place.

To qualify for the program, you must have general study competence or vocational education with a professional certificate. It is also possible to apply based on recognized prior learning.

For international students, depending upon which country you have received your education from, the requirements will differ. Please use this website where you can find the specific requirements for your country at the bottom of the page.

You can read more about admission requirements here.

All our study programs are approved for loans and grants from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen). You can apply to the Loan Fund for basic support (loan and grant; NOK 137,907) and tuition fees (NOK 74,366).

As an adult student, you can receive loans and grants from the State Educational Loan Fund. This also applies if you work while studying.

As a main rule, you must be a Norwegian citizen to receive support from the Norwegian State Educational Fund. However, foreign citizens may also be entitled to financial support. Check here to see if you are eligible.
