Hardware and software

We recommend the following:

Laptop:

  • A recent Mac or Windows-based laptop for use with music software in classes and projects outside of the school's studios. Students will be provided with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) license valid for the academic year, which can be used for all school projects. Most assignments can also be completed using the student's preferred DAW.
  • The school's studio computers are all OSX (Mac), and knowledge of this platform is part of the curriculum but not mandatory for personal laptops.

Audio Interface:

  • All students must have an audio interface with at least 1 microphone input (XLR) and headphone output. There are many affordable options, including products from Steinberg, Audient, Universal Audio Spark, SSL, and others. Feel free to ask for advice if you're unsure.

Headphones:

  • All students must have their wired, closed-back headphones of decent quality for individual tasks both at school and at home. There are numerous options to choose from, but we recommend looking at traditional brands like Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser, AKG.

Additional requirements for year 2:

  • Composition: Affordable software package with virtual instruments. Specifics will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
  • Sound Engineering: A Pace iLok dongle. It can be purchased at most stores selling music equipment.
