When Jeanette Selnes decided to leave behind a secure career and start over, she knew the road ahead would be challenging. But with a bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security from Noroff University College, she went from customer service to protecting Norway against digital threats.

After 24 years in sales and customer service, and several years as a consultant, Jeanette chose to take a big step: she retrained in cyber security through online studies at Noroff. Today, she works in a role with direct importance to Norway’s defense capability, as part of the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency’s work for national security.

The path into cyber security

Through her work as a consultant, she became familiar with the IT security industry and saw the serious consequences a lack of competence could have. She saw how companies wasted large sums of money and realized the severity of data breaches. After thorough research, she chose the bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security at Noroff University College.

– I worked full-time, was a single mother to a five-year-old, and started studying a new field. It was a tough choice, but it paid off. I completed my bachelor’s degree, and it opened the door to my dream job in information systems security.

Studying online

The combination of work, parenting, and studies made everyday life demanding, but Jeanette experienced a strong sense of community and support.

– Even though I was sitting at home behind my computer, I felt a sense of connection and support. What surprised me the most was how far the professors went to help.

The flexibility of recorded lectures made it possible to adapt her studies, but the key was engagement. The more involved you are, the better the results, says Jeanette.

From education to a critical national role

Through her bachelor’s thesis, Jeanette discovered her passion for Information Security Management, which led her to her current position at the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency. There, she works with security management, audits, risk assessments, and advisory services.

– What I value most in my job is the sense of purpose and responsibility. Every day, I know that what I do contributes to something bigger than myself – Norway’s security, says Jeanette.

Advice for others considering a career change

Jeanette emphasizes that you should not wait for the “perfect” time, because it will never come. She points out that it’s important to be prepared for hard work but reminds others that success is absolutely possible.

– Commitment, determination, and discipline matter more than background. Build a network around you, ask for help, and don’t be afraid to start over.
