The study program Python for Finance combines financial knowledge with Python skills. Currently, there is a wide range of job opportunities in the finance industry that require these skills.

Noroff recently launched the new study program Python for Finance, which started on 9 January 2024. The program is suitable for those with at least two years of work experience in the financial industry.

Customized for the finance industry

The goal of the study program is not to educate full-fledged developers, but to provide finance professionals with the skills to automate routine tasks relevant to their work. Python is a programming language customized for the financial industry.

Students learn how to create reports from Excel to Python, providing opportunities to process, visualize and analyze data in multiple ways. We spoke to Tor Kringeland, line manager of the program, who gave us a closer insight into the program.

The program focuses on programming with Python and applications in finance. The focus is on basic Python programming, as well as analysis, modelling and visualization of financial data with Python, he says.

Central role in banking and finance

Tor says that Python has played a central role in banking and finance over the past 20 years. It is used a lot for prediction and modeling, but also for developing computer systems.

There is a high demand for finance professionals who can program with Python. It used to be mainly specialists who used Python, but now there is more general knowledge for specific groups. Most people can use Python as a useful tool in their financial work.

The Python for Finance study program has a duration of one semester and is divided into two parts. The first part of the program emphasizes basic Python programming, which is important for students to master before working with more finance-specific issues. The second part of the course covers data analysis with Python, using several external libraries for Python that are widely used in the financial industry.

In addition to assignments for each course, students will complete two independent projects. The focus is on independent learning and exploring various libraries and ideas within Python, says Tor.

The main goal of this program is to give students relevant practical experience that they can use immediately. The Python for Finance program is available as online studies and has four start-ups per year.
