After working as a teacher for 15 years, Kirsti (45) felt the need to try something new. She chose online studies in technical design.

Kirsti Eide Friell is studying technical design – mechanical and Digital Prototyping through Noroff Online Studies. What she particularly enjoys about the study is the creative processes where she can develop ideas into finished products digitally or physically.

To achieve good product design, there has been a lot of software learning, and I've also had to brush up on my math skills. Visualizing the products I have worked on has been extra fun because the end result often looks very professional, she says.

In the study of technical design – mechanical, , you learn to draw, model, and visualize mechanical assemblies and constructions in CAD, product design, and digital prototyping. The study is available online and has the next start in October.

Wanted to Work on Something Creative

Kirsti has taught media studies in high school and has loved working with students and creative processes.

One of the projects we worked on was about branding design, where students, among other things, had to create their own logo. We collaborated with FabLab in Moss, where they could print, mill, or embroider their finished logo on a product. I was there as a guide and teacher, but I felt the desire to work creatively myself, and 3D printing was the most tempting, she says.

The interest in 3D printing led the 45-year-old to enroll in the technical design study. Since the study is online, Kirsti has easily been able to combine her life as a student with family life. She has also been very fortunate to meet a fellow student with whom she has collaborated closely. Although there are some self-studies, teachers are available for questions or guidance every school day on either the forum or email.

I want to highlight especially a teacher named Haakon who has taken the time to clarify and explain so that I have experienced a sense of achievement along the way, says the online student.

Internship at the Hospital

Kirsti says that the content of the study has been very varied, and she has gained a good insight into the endless possibilities of digital prototyping.

Digital prototyping has started to become well-established in several industries, but it is still in enormous development. For me, it is the processes from idea to finished product that have been most exciting.

In the study, they have had live streams with people from the industry talking about the field's development in Norway and providing information about the industry.

Many of the tasks and theories we have gone through have a foundation in existing products, and there has been a focus on user-friendliness and industry standards.

Currently, Kirsti is in an exciting and educational internship at the 3D Center at Oslo University Hospital.

Medical 3D printing, especially in orthopedics, is definitely an area I could imagine exploring after my studies. I also find product design and visualization exciting, so I am very open to opportunities in this field, she concludes..
