- The online study programme gives me the opportunity to develop my skills, work, and take care of my children at the same time, Aleksander says.

Aleksander Totland (30) has always been interested in tech and problem-solving. When he wanted to return to school, Backend Development at Noroff online study programme was a natural choice.

– I thought, 'why not,' I mean, I'm not getting any younger, he laughs before continuing:

– The study allows me to develop my skills, work, and take care of my children simultaneously. It works very well for me because I can study whenever it suits me.

Flexibility in daily life

Aleksander's study routine varies depending on his work schedule, but no matter what shifts he has, he always finds time for his studies.

It's good to know that if I need assistance, it's never far away.Aleksander Totland

– If I work from 07:00-15:00, pick up the kids from daycare, and take care of them in the evening, I have time to study at night. If I have an evening shift, I usually drop off the kids at daycare before spending the morning studying. The days I don't work are probably the days I have the most time to study, but everything works. It's very flexible, he says.

He mostly studies on his own but finds there is a lot of support available when he needs it.

– I can communicate with both fellow students and teachers via Discord. It's comforting to realize that many others are wrestling with the same challenges, so it's nice to know that if I need assistance, it's never far away, he says.

A desires to enhance his abilities

Backend Development is a one-year program where students learn to develop the core of technological solutions. Backend developers top the list of the most in-demand tech jobs in 2022. The knowledge gained in the programme can be combined with other fields, something Aleksander has experienced.

– The most useful thing I have learned so far in the program is fundamental programming and concepts that can be applied in other areas and languages. It's knowledge I can build on, he says.

He's not entirely sure what he will do after completing his studies, but he envisions expanding his skills further.

– I have a thought of completing a self-selected bachelor's degree, or possibly studying frontend development. It might also be that I try to land a new job before that. I don't see it as a bleak prospect since there's a high demand in the job market, he says, smiling.

What advice would you give to new online students?

– Take your time, don't stress, and use the network of fellow students. A good way to learn is to explain things to someone else; that way, you put your knowledge to the test. Additionally, it's always healthy to have multiple perspectives on potential challenges, he concludes.

Backend Ddevelopment online starts on October 18th. You can read more about the programme and how to secure your spot here.
