Håkon (26) is taking his entire bachelor's degree online. - There is something about being able to solve puzzles and challenges that makes me feel really engrossed in my work, he says.

Unearthing information and drawing conclusions based on digital traces is like solving a puzzle, and it gives me a sense of satisfaction when it falls into place. This becomes an even greater motivation when our subject teachers draw on personal experiences and cases they have worked with and solved in the past, says Håkon Smalås (26).

He is taking a bachelor's degree in  Digital Forensics via Noroff University College Online.

At the present time, there is no doubt that I want to join the Police in order to work as a special investigator. This is a large field with many opportunities that is constantly developing, so it will be exciting to see where the road goes.

Bachelor student from home

My choice mainly fell on Noroff University College because of the offer of online studies. With the help of research and good feedback and experienced professionals in the industry, I came to the conclusion that this felt like the best choice for me, smiles Håkon.

The 26-year-old studies via online studies, and watches the lectures, which are streamed live from the teaching on campus, from home. He thus attends lectures, guidance sessions and compulsory assessments throughout the course.

As an online student, I find the situation absolutely fantastic. I am able to structure my schedule so that I can work on tasks when it suits me, while also being able to balance work and family in a more efficient way. Studying online has proven to be of great importance to me, especially in my current situation.

Desired expertise

A digital forensic investigator must have a combination of technical skills and analytical skills to succeed in the profession. Some of the most important skills include technical competence, analytical thinking, creativity, good communication skills, the ability to collaborate and work effectively in teams, as well as a high degree of ethical awareness.

He continues:

A digital forensic investigator must also have a good understanding of computer crime, digital tools and software to carry out a successful digital investigation.

The competence and skills that Håkon is left with will be sought after in the public sector, police and intelligence, and throughout industry. The enormous growth in computer technology creates real threats for both companies and government critical infrastructures.

Part of our study involves working together in groups to solve tasks together with others. From the start of the course, we are encouraged to build networks and are made aware of the importance of having a presence on platforms such as LinkedIn in order to make contacts with others in the industry. This gives us the opportunity to establish relationships and gain valuable insight that can benefit us in our careers.

I feel really well looked after by my subject teachers, as they are always available when I need guidance or just have a chat. It seems as if they really care that each student succeeds and develops to be as good as possible within our subject, concludes Håkon.
