– If you love challenges, breaking things apart to put them together again and computers in general, then Digital Forensics is definitely for you.

When Lorena Carthy-Wilmot (29) was in her last year at Noroff University College in 2018, she was offered a trainee position at PwC. This led to a full-time job.

– I worked as a trainee while working on my thesis and was able to get hands-on experience at the lab. After I graduated, I was offered a full-time position at the lab. It has been a great place to start my career, she says.

She continues:

– I studied Digital Forensics at Noroff Kristiansand and graduated in 2019 with honors. I have always loved everything about forensics, so this is exactly what I love to do.

Working with a broader type of cases

I have always loved everything about forensics, so this is exactly what I love to doLorena Carthy-Wilmot

The three-year bachelor program in Digital Forensics prepares you for work within digital security and forensics in a number of work fields. In her position as Senior Associate at the Forensics Technology Services Lab at PwC Oslo, Lorena gets to work with several different cases.

– Working in consultancy allows me to experience a broader type of cases, but also across other lines of work withing PwC. I get to collaborate with really great coworkers from all over the world, she says.

– In what way do you feel that your degree from Noroff has prepared you for work?

– I think in general I was able to learn how to dig deeper into the subjects that I was interested in, which in turn has allowed me to improve on my own skills. I have also learned how to focus my skills in a more tool-agnostic sort of way, meaning I learn how to do things and not just how to use tools. I also learned to be more open to ask for help and collaborate, which is crucial when working in tech. Even bouncing ideas off someone else can help find solutions to problems. The friends I made at school are still the friends I go to do exactly that, she says.

Lorena now combines her job at PwC with a master’s degree in Cyber Security at Teesside University in England.

– I waited one year before starting a master’s, so that I could focus on my first year at the lab. I look forward to graduating in 2022, she says.

Great student environment

Lorena was a very active student and had a good time studying at Noroff Kristiansand.

– The student environment is really up to the students, I would say. For me it was good. Back in my day we had really good equipment, so it was up to us what to do with it. We were able to organize events and have a great time at school. We had activities from code jams to Dungeons & Dragons tournaments, she says.

What would you like to say to anyone considering a bachelor in Digital Forensics?

– Go for it! If you love challenges, breaking things apart to put them together again and computers in general, then Digital Forensics is definitely for you. And even if some courses might feel difficult, this is the place for learning. No one is expected to know things when you start, all you need to have is an interest for learning and the ability to ask questions.
