Technical design is a popular field of study that offers many opportunities for the future. Noroff Vocational School offers three different courses of study where you can specialise in architectural technical design, mechanical technical design, or building information modelling.

Mechanical Technical Design

The study program in mechanical technical design is aimed at those who want to develop technical solutions for mechanical systems and products. As a student, you will gain expertise in producing technical drawings for the mechanical industry according to Norwegian standards. Upon completion of the programme, you will have the opportunity to work as a technical drafter, product developer, CAD technician, or technical consultant.

In mechanical technical design, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of technical drawing and modelling, as well as practical projects and visualisation tasks that will enhance your conceptual skills. Product development and prototyping are integral parts of the programme, and the use of computer-aided design (CAD) provides valuable hands-on experience.

Architectural Technical Design

The architectural technical design course is suitable for those interested in technical design and problem solving in key support industries for architecture and construction. Focusing on the production of 3D models, construction drawings, and information flow, this course offers a unique opportunity to combine technical expertise in a practical way. Potential career paths include technical drafter, CAD operator, or BIM operator.

The course includes topics such as 2D drafting, 3D modelling and visualisation, preparing students for a career in technical drafting or further study based on technical knowledge. As a student, you will also undertake visualisation assignments to develop your conceptualisation and presentation skills.

If you wish, you can also apply directly to the second year of the two-year Technical Design - BIM course after completing this one-year programme.

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

The BIM specialisation is a key part of the digital transformation of the construction industry. The course provides a thorough introduction to the building design process and how advanced digital solutions contribute to the development of construction projects at various stages.

The focus goes beyond technical skills to include tools for collaboration to meet client needs and visions in a professional environment. Possible roles after graduation include BIM operator, BIM technician or technical drafter.

As a BIM student, you will learn to use professional BIM and 3D CAD software. The first year focuses on technical drawing and three-dimensional modelling, while the second year develops skills in understanding the information contained in models and how to optimise their value in a construction process.

Which Direction Is Right for You?

When it comes to choosing a course, here are some tips on what to consider:

  1. Explore your interests and passions
  2. Assess your skills and strengths
  3. Consider your career prospects and goals
  4. Explore possible roles and responsibilities
  5. Examine curricula and course content

Our courses have a strong foundation in modern digital tools and techniques, with a practical approach through project work and assignments. However, the specific areas of focus are unique to each pathway: BIM focuses on digital modelling and collaboration, while Architectural and Mechanical technical design focuses on practical skills to support work in their respective fields.

Your choice of pathway should reflect your individual interests and career goals. BIM is ideal for those who want to be part of the digital transformation of the construction industry. Architectural technical design appeals to those interested in the architecture and construction industry and opens doors to roles such as BIM operator, technical draughtsman, CAD operator and 3D visualiser. On the other hand, mechanical technical design is for those who want to tackle mechanical challenges, with opportunities such as technical draughtsman, product developer, CAD technician or technical consultant.

Whichever you choose, our Technical Design degree provides a solid foundation for a successful career in an increasingly digital world.
